Things patients need to know about rhinoplasty

Your nose is a significant part of your face and can make or mar the look on your face. It doesn’t come as a surprise that many people are unhappy and dissatisfied with the shape of their nose. No wonder, rhinoplasty occupies a place in the top five cosmetic surgical procedures around the world.

The statistics related to it are quite impressive. The number of surgeries performed annually is quite high. However, it continues to be misinterpreted and misunderstood. So let’s shed some light on the intricacies of the rhinoplasty surgery procedure.

  1. Rhinoplasty might be a common procedure but, but it requires a specialist’s touch. You will have to accept the fact that it can’t be carried out by just any plastic surgeon. The patients should know that a surgeon having ISAPS membership is an indication that he has exceptional skills and experience rhinoplasty.
  2. The patients should have a clear idea of the risks associated with the surgery. While Rhinoplasty can alleviate the problems that lead to difficulty in breathing, but it may not be successful in eliminating them. A deviated septum is a case in the point. The patient may face trouble in breathing if the shape of the nose is altered. Some patients may also find a change in their voices after rhinoplasty.
  3. Sometimes patients want to copy the nose of their favorite celebrity. Understanding the fact that the nose harmonises  with the face is essential .
  4. As the nose has delicate tissue surrounding it, they might experience facial bruising and “black eyes” post-surgery. These will fade within two weeks of surgery; the patients must be mentally prepared to face such temporary changes.
  5. Some patients feel that rhinoplasty is not “real” surgery and do not take any precaution after it. They might return to strenuous activities too soon which might lead to detrimental effects on their recovery.
  6. Immediately after the surgery, the patients might feel that their nose has not turned out to be what they expected. They must pay heed to the advice that their nose will continue to change as long as the healing process takes place.
  7. The patients should not run after perfection, which is quite artificial a concept as far as the human body is concerned. No matter how expertly the surgeon sculpts the nose, it can still have tiny bumps, lack of symmetry and other characteristics that might not be desirable. Nature plays a great role here as it tries to balance the nose with the rest of the face. So running after perfection will not pay.
